Boarding process enhancements

The goal of this shift is to maintain an efficient and orderly boarding approach that is optimized to assigned seating, prioritizing Customers into boarding groups based on seat location, beginning with Extra Legroom seats in boarding groups 1 and 2. Our premium fares and our most loyal Customers will have access to better seat types and will board earlier in the process. Take a look at our new boarding groups below.

We’ll continue to offer four bundle options, now with updated names and new benefits. Basic launches on May 28, 2025. The other new fare products will launch in Q3, aligning with the introduction of assigned and premium seating. Customers can expect to start booking flights with assigned seats in Q3 for travel beginning in Q1, 2026. The new fare bundles are:

  • Business Select® will become Choice Extra and includes the ability to select an Extra Legroom seat at the time of booking, two checked bags for free (weight and size limits apply), earlier boarding, ticket refundability, day-of travel perks, and the highest Rapid Rewards® points earn ratio.
  • Anytime will become Choice Preferred and includes the ability to select a Preferred seat at the time of booking, earlier boarding, ticket refundability, and day-of travel perks similar to those of Choice Extra.
  • Wanna Get Away Plus® will become Choice and includes the ability to select a Standard seat at the time of booking, Transferable Flight Credit, and flexibility to make same-day changes.
  • Our Wanna Get Away® fare class will be replaced by our Basic fare, beginning May 28, 2025. Our Basic fare bundle is ideal for travelers looking for a simple, cost-effective way to reach their destination. Customers who purchase Basic will have a Standard seat assigned at check-in, this fare is nonrefundable and will not allow for changes. However, if Customers need to change their flight, they will be able to upgrade to Choice, Choice Preferred, or Choice Extra.

Yes, all Rapid Rewards Credit Cards will include complimentary seating and boarding benefits, when available.

  • Plus and Plus Business will receive Standard16 seat selection 48 hours prior to departure, when available, along with a boarding benefit and first checked bag free20
  • Premier and Premier Business will receive Standard or Preferred18 seating benefits 48 hours prior to departure, when available, along with a boarding benefit and first checked bag free20.
  • Priority and Performance Business will receive Standard16 or Preferred17 seating benefits at booking. And will be eligible to upgrade to an Extra Legroom19 seating benefits 48 hours prior to departure, when available, along with a boarding benefit and first checked bag free20.

The benefits for our most loyal Customers, A-List and A-List Preferred Members, will be enhanced with new perks. Tier Members will enjoy boarding benefits and seating choices at the time of booking.

  • A-List Preferred Members will be able to select any available seats at the time of booking, including Extra Legroom, at no additional cost.
  • Also, A-List Preferred Members will receive their first and second checked bags free. This benefit also extends to up to eight additional Passengers traveling on the same reservation. Weight and size limits apply.
  • A-List Members will be able to select any Preferred and Standard seats when available at the time of booking. A-List Members can enhance their seat selection into an available Extra Legroom seat at no additional cost within 48 hours of departure if available.
  • Also, A-List Members will receive their first checked bag free. This benefit also extends to up to eight additional Passengers traveling on the same reservation. Weight and size limits apply.

Today, tier Members have SDC at no additional cost as a benefit, and all Customers have SDSB for all fares at no additional cost. In the future, Customers who purchase Choice (formerly Wanna Get Away Plus®), Choice Preferred (formerly Anytime), and Choice Extra (formerly Business Select®) are able to change their flights on the same departure date at no additional cost. Same Day Standby will continue as a tier benefit, even on Basic fares.

Rapid Rewards Members can continue to enjoy our industry-leading loyalty program. We will continue to offer no blackout dates, uncapped reward seat availability, and points that don’t expire.

We recognize these changes may impact how business Customers interact with Southwest Business. We are actively working through details on how best to offer updated contractual benefits into future corporate travel agreements, and we will strive to keep you informed on any updates.

Yes, all eligible distribution channels are expected to have the ability to select assigned seats on fares that include this benefit at the time of booking. We are engaging with our partners and are working through their configurations to display a seamless experience across eligible booking tools.

Boarding Frequently Asked Questions

We’re transitioning from open to assigned seating, starting with flights on or after January 27, 2026. With most fares, Customers will be able to choose their seat at booking. We are also moving from our current A/B/C groups with numbered positions to a new boarding structure using Groups 1 through 8. Additionally, stanchions will no longer be used in gate areas. Until then, all flights through January 27, 2026, will continue with open seating and the existing boarding process.

Seat selection will become available on July 29, 2025 for flights operating January 27, 2026 and beyond.

No, with assigned seating, you’ll select your seat during booking for most fares, and it will be saved for you. Seat selection will no longer be based on boarding order. If you purchase our Basic fare, your seat assignment will be provided at check-in, unless you are a Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmember (seat selection subject to availability) or have Tier status.

Families traveling on the same confirmation number will be assigned to the same boarding group. Families traveling on Choice, Choice Preferred, or Choice Extra fares will be able to select seats during booking. For families traveling on Basic fares, seats will be assigned at check-in or at the gate. We will do our best to seat families together. When seats are limited, we’ll work to seat children ages 13 and younger next to at least one adult in your party.

We’ll do our best to accommodate you and your family. If seats are not selected during booking or prior to departure, we will auto-assign seats for you at check-in or at the gate. We’ll work to seat children ages 13 and younger next to at least one adult in your party.

When available, Customers can purchase EarlyBird Check-In and Upgrading Boarding for flights on or before January 26, 2026. Once assigned seating begins on January 27, 2026, Early Bird Check-In and Upgraded Boarding will no longer be available.

A-List Preferred Members will board no later than Group 2, and A-List Members will board no later than Group 5. This applies to the tier Member and up to eight additional Passengers traveling on the same reservation. For flights departing on or after January 27, 2026, A-List Members will be able to select a Preferred or Standard seat at the time of booking, when available, and an Extra Legroom seat within 48 hours of departure, if available, at no additional cost, with associated boarding benefits. A-List Preferred will be able to select available seats, including Extra Legroom, at the time of booking at no additional cost, with associated boarding benefits.

Credit Cardmembers will board with Group 5 if they are not assigned an earlier boarding position based on seat type, fare type or tier status. This benefit applies to the Cardmember and up to eight additional Passengers traveling on the same reservation. With the introduction of the new assigned seating benefits for Credit Cardmembers, Customers can select seats that most align with their preferences, increasing flexibility and control over their inflight experience. For flights departing on or after January 27, 2026, Priority and Performance Cardmembers will be able to select a Preferred or Standard seat at the time of booking, when available, and an Extra Legroom seat within 48 hours of departure, if available, at no additional cost, with associated boarding benefits. Premier Consumer and Business Cardmembers will be able to select a Preferred or Standard seat within 48 hours of departure, if available, at no additional cost, with associated boarding benefits. Plus Consumer and Business Cardholders will be able to select a Standard seat within 48 hours of departure, if available, at no additional cost, with associated boarding benefits.

Seat maps during booking will show each seat’s location, so you can choose based on your travel needs and preferences.

Seats will be available at no added cost based on your fare bundle, tier status, or Cardmember benefits. If your preferred seat is not included with your fare, you may be able to purchase the seat.

Customers will be able to purchase Priority Boarding beginning 24 hours prior to departure to be among the first to board once flights with assigned seating take off on January 27, 2026.

For Companion Pass holders and Companions, boarding group will be assigned based on their seat location or Credit Cardmember/Tier boarding benefit, whichever is higher. Companion Pass holders and their Companions will both be eligible for the most favorable seat options conferred by their individual Tier status, Credit Cardmember status, or fare. Sequential boarding is not guaranteed.

We’ll share more information about boarding and airport experience as flights with assigned seating start to take off on January 27, 2026.

Terms and Conditions

1Basic fares: Basic fares are non-refundable except as allowed by our 24-hour cancellation policy. Flight changes are allowed but require a fare upgrade. Customers may be eligible for a flight credit if canceled at least 10 minutes prior to the flight's original departure time.

2Checked bag: Bag fees will apply to Wanna Get Away® (Basic), Wanna Get Away Plus® (Choice), and Anytime (Choice Preferred) fares booked and ticketed and/or changed on or after May 28, 2025. Business Select® (Choice Extra) fares, will continue to receive two free checked bags. Rapid Rewards® A-List Preferred members will receive their first and second checked bags for free. A-List members and Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers will only receive their first checked bag for free. Checked bag benefits will not apply on flights booked with a partner carrier. Weight and size limits apply.

3Rapid Rewards points: Rapid Rewards points can be earned from (a) Qualifying Flights (defined below) operated by Southwest®, or (b) through qualifying purchases with our Rapid Rewards partners. “Qualifying Flights” include flights operated by Southwest Airlines® and paid entirely with dollars, Southwest LUV Vouchers, gift cards, or flight credits and those paid with Cash + Points. NOTE: With a Cash + Points booking, points are earned only on the portion of the base fare that is paid with dollars. Qualifying Flights exclude reward flights, charter flights, nonrevenue travel, and Companion Pass® travel. All Rapid Rewards rules and regulations apply and can be found at Southwest.com/rrterms.

4No cancel fees: All fare types are eligible for cancellations without a fee. For changes to a flight itinerary with Wanna Get Away Plus®(Choice), Anytime (Choice Preferred), and Business Select® (Choice Extra), there is no fee, though a fare difference may apply. Failure to cancel a reservation at least 10 minutes prior to original scheduled departure may result in forfeited travel funds.

5Refundability: As long as you cancel your reservation at least 10 minutes prior to the original scheduled departure of your flight, you’re eligible to receive 100% of your ticket value as a refund to your original form of payment. A Southwest® flight credit from a previous reservation that is applied toward a Business Select® (Choice Extra) or Anytime (Choice Preferred) fare will be refunded as a Transferable Flight Credit. For travel booked with Rapid Rewards® points, if canceled, points will be returned to the Rapid Rewards account holder who booked the ticket. If you do not cancel, your funds will be refunded as a Transferable Flight Credit. Learn more.

6Transferable Flight Credit: To receive a credit, you must cancel your flight at least 10 minutes prior to the flight’s original scheduled departure time. If you do not cancel, your points and funds may be forfeited. Learn more. Transferable Flight Credits created from reservations booked and ticketed and/or changed on or after May 28, 2025 expire twelve months from the date the fare was purchased and ticketed. Transferable Flight Credits can be transferred between Rapid Rewards® Members. Only one transfer is permitted. For bookings made through a Southwest® Business channel, transfers are allowed only between employees within the organization.

7Flight credit expiration: To receive a flight credit, you must cancel your flight at least 10 minutes prior to the flight’s original scheduled departure time. If you do not cancel, your points and funds may be forfeited. Learn more. Business Select® (Choice Extra), Anytime (Choice Preferred), and Wanna Get Away Plus® (Choice) Transferable Flight Credits created from reservations booked and ticketed and/or changed on or after May 28, 2025 expire twelve months from the date the fare was purchased and ticketed. Basic fare flight credits expire six months from the date the fare was purchased and ticketed.

8Changes: If you need to change an upcoming flight itinerary, you’ll only pay the difference in fare for Wanna Get Away Plus® (Choice), Anytime (Choice Preferred), and Business Select® (Choice Extra) fares (if one applies). For Basic fares, you may upgrade the fare to Wanna Get Away Plus® (Choice), Anytime (Choice Preferred), or Business Select® (Choice Extra). Failure to cancel a reservation at least 10 minutes prior to original scheduled departure may result in forfeited travel funds.

9Free same-day change/standby: Same-day change: On the day of travel, you can switch to another flight with space available departing on the same calendar day between the same origin airport and destination airport as your original flight. As of May 28, 2025, free same-day change is only available for Business Select® (Choice Extra), Anytime (Choice Preferred), or Wanna Get Away Plus® (Choice) fares. Wanna Get Away® (Basic) fares, and Rapid Rewards® A-List Preferred and A-List Members will no longer be eligible for free same-day change unless the Member purchases a qualifying fare. NOTE: A-List and A-List Preferred Members who purchased Wanna Get Away® fares and ticketed and/or changed on or before May 27, 2025, are eligible for same-day change regardless of the travel date.

Same-day standby: You can list for same-day standby on an earlier flight via a Southwest® Customer Service Agent at the airport or the Southwest app or mobile web. You will receive a message based on the contact preference selected during booking if you are cleared on the flight. With the exception of A-List Preferred and A-List Members, Customers who purchase Basic fares are not eligible for free same-day standby.

For both same-day change and same-day standby, you must change your flight or request to be added to the same-day standby list at least 10 minutes prior to the original scheduled departure of your flight or the no-show policy will apply. If using the app or mobile web for standby, you must list your name 30 minutes ahead of original scheduled departure. You will be required to pay any government taxes and fees associated with these itinerary changes, but refunds will be provided. Your original boarding position is not guaranteed. Southwest Business Customers booked through travel agencies may need to see a Southwest Agent at the airport for both a same-day change or standby listing. 10EarlyBird Check-In® You will automatically be checked in to your flight 36 hours prior to scheduled departure. For Choice Preferred fares purchased between 36 and 24 hours, the boarding position assignment process has begun so this may impact the boarding position assigned to you. If you purchase a Choice Preferred fare within 24 hours of your flight’s scheduled departure, you will not receive the EarlyBird Check-In benefit. In an irregular operation situation, the boarding position is not guaranteed. Subject to availability on open seating flights, departing on or before January 26, 2026

11Free Inflight entertainment: Where available. Available only on WiFi-enabled aircraft. Limited-time offer. Texting only allows access to iMessage and WhatsApp (which must be downloaded and activated before connecting to Southwest WiFi).

12Priority and Express Lanes: Priority and Express Lanes, (where available), can be accessed by Business Select® (Choice Extra), and Anytime (Choice Preferred) Customers and A-List and A-List Preferred Members. Priority Lanes are at Southwest® check-in counters, and Express Lanes are at security checkpoints.

13Complimentary premium drink: On select flights traveling 251 miles or more, Business Select® (Choice Extra) travelers receive one complimentary premium drink on the day of travel and A-List Preferred Members receive up to two complimentary premium drinks per leg. Drink coupons are subject to availability. Service may also be limited at Southwest's discretion. This coupon has no cash value. Drink coupon is void if altered, sold, purchased, brokered, or bartered. Non-exchangeable for other goods or services. Southwest Airlines® reserves the right to discontinue its drink coupon program at any time. Coupon is invalid after expiration date and will not be updated or replaced. Alcohol purchased with drink coupons must be consumed onboard the aircraft. Must be 21 years or older to consume alcoholic beverages.

15Seat: Basic fares will be assigned a seat at check-in with the exception of A-List Preferred and A-List Members as well as some Rapid Rewards® Credit Cardmembers who may choose a seat at time of booking, if available. Extra Legroom seats have a few more inches of legroom and are located at the front of the cabin and exit rows. Preferred seats have standard legroom and are near the front of the cabin. Standard seats also have standard legroom but are in the back of the cabin. When purchased separately, seat cancellations are not permitted unless you cancel the flight altogether, and seat is only refundable when exchanged for a higher priced seat. Seat exchanges are permitted; price difference may apply. Learn more. 

16Boarding benefit: Boarding group is based on the seat type and location in the cabin. The seats included in the fare bundle are based on availability. Our Rapid Rewards® A-List Preferred, A-List Members, and Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers have a boarding benefit.

17First Checked Bag Free: The primary Rapid Rewards® Credit Cardmember and up to eight Passengers traveling on the same reservation are each eligible to receive their first standard checked bag free. Cardmembers should allow up to 14 days for card status to be updated in their Rapid Rewards account to be eligible for this benefit. To receive their first standard checked bag free, the primary Cardmember must include their Rapid Rewards number in their reservation. The first standard checked bag free is not available on flights booked with a partner carrier. Service charges for oversized, overweight, and extra baggage may apply. Cardmembers with A-List Preferred or A-List status or who purchase a fare that includes a free checked bag will receive the bag benefits associated with their Southwest Rapid Rewards® tier status or fare. Cardmembers who are already exempt from paying the charge for their first checked bag are not eligible for this benefit. Authorized users of Rapid Reward Credit Cards and employee cards of Rapid Rewards Business Credit Cards are not eligible for this benefit. Credit card account must be open and not in default to be eligible for this benefit. Chase is not responsible for the provision of or failure to provide the stated benefits and services.

18Standard Seat Selection Within 48 Hours Prior to Departure: When available, primary Cardmembers with a Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card, Southwest Rapid Rewards® Employee Credit Card, or Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Business Credit Card will be able to select a Standard seat within 48 hours prior to a flight’s scheduled local departure time. If no Standard seat is available, Cardmembers will be assigned a seat in accordance with the fare rules of the ticket purchased. When available, Cardmembers will be able to select Standard seats for up to 8 additional Passengers on the same reservation as the Cardmember, allowing for a total of 9 Standard seats. If the Cardmember is removed from the reservation and there is no primary Cardmember or tier Rapid Rewards® Member with the same or greater seating benefits, all seating selections for that reservation will be released and seats will be assigned in accordance with the fare rules of the ticket purchased. Benefits may not apply on itineraries booked with partner airlines. Cardmembers should allow up to 14 days for card status to be updated in their Rapid Rewards account to be eligible for this benefit. Authorized users of a Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card and Rapid Rewards Employee Credit Card; and employee cards of a Rapid Rewards Plus Business Credit Card are not eligible for this benefit. Credit card account must be open and not in default when selecting a Standard seat. If your Credit card account is closed or in default before or at the time of travel, the seat selection will be released. Chase is not responsible for the provision of or failure to provide the stated benefits and services.

19Preferred Seat Selection Within 48 Hours Prior to Departure: When available, primary Cardmembers with a Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card or a Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card will be able to select a Preferred or a Standard seat within 48 hours prior to a flight’s scheduled local departure time. If no Preferred or Standard seat is available, Cardmembers will be assigned a seat in accordance with the fare rules of the ticket purchased. When available, Cardmembers will be able to select Preferred or Standard seats for up to 8 additional Passengers on the same reservation as the Cardmember, allowing for a total of 9 Preferred or Standard seats. If the Cardmember is removed from the reservation and there is no primary Cardmember or tier Rapid Rewards® Member with the same or greater seating benefits, all seating selections for that reservation will be released and seats will be assigned in accordance with the fare rules of the ticket purchased. Benefits may not apply on itineraries booked with partner airlines. 22Companion Pass Qualifying Points Boost: As a Southwest Rapid Rewards Cardmember, you will earn one boost of 10,000 Companion Pass qualifying points each calendar year. The boost will be deposited into your eligible Rapid Rewards account by January 31st each calendar year or up to 30 days after account opening. To receive Companion Pass qualifying points boost your credit card account must be open and not in default at the time of fulfillment. 30Group 5 Boarding Benefit: Primary Cardmembers with a Southwest Rapid Rewards® Credit Card or Southwest Rapid Rewards® Business Credit Card will be able to board their Southwest® flight with Group 5. Up to 8 Passengers traveling on the same reservation as the Cardmember will be able to board with Group 5 as long as the Cardmember remains booked on the same reservation. Eligible Passengers will have “Cardmember” displayed on their Southwest® boarding pass to indicate their boarding privilege. If the Cardmember’s account is closed or in default before or at the time of travel, this benefit will be canceled for them and all Passengers on the same reservation. If the Cardmember is removed from the reservation and there is no primary Cardmember or tier Rapid Rewards member with the same or greater boarding benefits, boarding will be assigned in accordance with the fare rules of the ticket purchased.
